Meeting - March 2015

Friday, 27 March 2015 - 7:30pm
Title:
A Hundred Years of British Comic Papers
Presenter:
Ray Aspden

A PowerPoint presentation.

Review:

This was a most enjoyable and memory provoking talk by Ray Aspen which gave much enjoyment to many of those present by taking them back to their childhood. The Dandy and The Beano were well remembered by everyone present as were the characters which were portrayed in them particularly Desperate Dan, Dennis the Menace and Billy Bunter. We learned that Billy Bunter originated in 1908 and continued until 1976!
Other Characters mentioned were “Roy of the Rovers” and of course in later years “Dan Dare” in the Eagle comic, although most of us had grown up by this time and only tended to remember him as someone our children talked about.
We learned that the first British comic was “The Boys Own” which came out in 1879 with the Dandy and Beano appearing in 1937 and 1938 respectively. There were many slides showing the various characters and much more historic information to absorb, which, as children, we knew nothing about, but now, were most interested to learn about.
