Film show and talk.
On Friday the 30th November we were pleased to welcome Mr Alan Thornton, a member of our Society, to present an illustrated talk entitled “Make Do And Mend”. This was a light hearted look at the way we lived in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Alan has a great sense of humour and an almost “Stage Comedian’s” approach to his presentation which has the audience chuckling from the word go. The programme opened with a series of statements, quotations and events which had meaning to many members who had lived through the Second World War. Alan encouraged the audience to comment during the show with their own memories. His digital picture presentation also included video clips from films of the time. The video clips in particular were of great interest with details of womenfolk adapting old or second had clothes for children and indeed themselves. One, which generated much amusement, was a young woman demonstrating how to make a bra from a pair of large handkerchiefs. This was a most enjoyable evening with much talk and many reminiscences’ during and after the presentation.
